In the past ten years, the Wave Rotor technology has been tested
extensively up to scale 1:5. Models have been tested both in tanks and in open
sea.
The results of these tests gave sufficient confidence to scale up towards
a commercial system. The objective is to develop an offshore system which can
be deployed on a large scale near shores on existing infrastructure and also
offshore for example in combination with existing structures such as wind
turbines or offshore platforms.
The C-Energy demonstrator will be installed on a jetty owned by Total Refinery
Netherlands (hyperlink) in the Westerschelde. The rotor has a diameter of
approximately five meters and is five meters deep (1:2 scale).
This project has the objective to:
- Demonstrate
the economic viability of energy generation from tidal flows and waves.
- Gain
experiences with all the stages of development, manufacturing, installation
and maintenance of a near shore device.
- Monitor
and analyze the operational behaviour and performance of the system.
